Graduated from Bethel College in 1981. Karen was the first woman to receive a Bethel athletic scholarship. During her four years at Bethel she lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She was co-captain of the volleyball team in 1979 and Captain in 1980. She helped lead Bethel volleyball to its first winning season in 1978, its first invitation to a national tournament in 1979, and a 2nd place finish at the Messiah-NCCAA National Invitational Tournament in 1980.
