Mishawaka, Ind. – The Bethel women's soccer team fell in overtime to rival Grace on Saturday evening, giving up a goal in the 99th minute to fall 1-0. The Pilots fall to 3-7-2 on the season and 1-2-0 in the Crossroads League.
Rebecca Kanpol (JR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) and the Pilots put the pressure on early in a back-and-forth defensive battle. Kanpol put three shots on goal in the first half, while Delanee Frye (SO/Middletown, Ind.) added another. However, the Pilots were denied by Grace's Abby Schue. Likewise, the Lancers were unable to find the back of the net in any of their four chances in the first stanza, with both teams headed to the intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
Zimmerly and the Pilots held strong in the second stanza, making four saves in the second half to keep the Lancers off the scoreboard. Kama Hardy (SO/Toledo, Ohio) tallied the Pilots' lone shot in the second 45 but could not find the back of the net and the scoreless match headed to extra time.
With 1:35 remaining in the first overtime session, Grace's Flavia Faria squeezed one past Zimmerly to win the match for the Lancers.
Zimmerly made seven saves on the afternoon while Kanpol's three shots on goal led the Pilots.
"It's always a bit gut-wrenching to lose in overtime and today was no exception to that," said Head Coach Jamie Lindvall. "Full credit to Grace for capitalizing and finishing, but now it falls to us to refine our play a bit and continue to work to play to our strengths as we prepare for Taylor."
The Pilots hit the road on Wednesday to take on 21st-ranked Taylor at 7:00 pm in Crossroads League action in Upland.
