Hammond, Ind. - The Bethel men's soccer team traveled to the home of NCAA D-II Purdue Northwest and came away with a 0-0 draw in double overtime on Saturday afternoon. The Pilots sit at 4-1-1 after Saturday's action.
The Pride attacked the Pilots early, with two shots going wide left in the first 18 minutes of action. Philip Keller (JR/Middlebury, Ind.) made back-to-back saves in the 24th and 25th minutes to keep the hosts off the board and another shot for the Pride went high in the 33rd minute.
The Pilots finally got a scoring opportunity in the 36th minute as Ian Billian forced put a shot on goal and Bruno Jaeger (JR/Balneario Camboriu, Brazil) had two scoring opportunities in the 37th and 38th minutes, but all three were denied by the Pride net minder. Keller made one more save in the 41st minute to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0 going into intermission.
Both teams continued to battle in the second period, as things got heated. PNW's Djordje Cancarevic drew a yellow card in the 59th minute while Bethel's Rolphson Clervoix (FR/Jamaica Queens, NY) drew a yellow card of his own in the 80th minute. The Pilots best opportunity came as Jaeger fired one off the post in the 66th minute. The Pilots were unable to break through on any of their four shots in the second stanza. Keller made two more saves in the second half to preserve his scoreless sheet and send the game into extra time.
Keller continued his fine play in goal, saving a Pride scoring opportunity in the 95th minute and the game headed to a second overtime period as the Pilots were unable to muster an attack in the first ten minutes of extra time. Keller added three more saves in the second overtime, including one in the 110th minute to preseve the shutout. Tanner Gibson (SO/Acton, Calif.), Samuel Biek (JR/Hessen, Germany), and Jackson Didion (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) all had opportunities to win it for the Pilots but could not find the back of the net and the game ended in a 0-0 draw in two overtimes.
The Pilots return home next Thursday and Saturday to host the Waterford Estates Fall Classic at Morey Field on the campus of Bethel College. The Pilots take on (RV) Northwestern (Iowa) on Friday at 7:30 pm, preceded by a matchup between Grace (Ind.) and Lawrence Tech (MIch.) at 5 pm. On Saturday, Grace plays Northwestern at 12:00 pm before the Pilots face off against Lawrence Tech at 3:00 pm.
