Mishawaka, Ind. - The Pilots faced their second nationally-recognized opponent of the season on Saturday afternoon, but fell in straight sets to (RV) Lourdes in a competitive match, 20-25, 24-26, 18-25.
The Pilots were unusually sloppy on the afternoon, committing 30 errors with a hitting percentage of .057%. The Lourdes attack kept the Pilots at bay all afternoon, with 35 kills and a .200 hitting percentage.
The Gray Wolves got off to a quick start, jumping on the Pilots 7-3 early. Makennize Williams (FR/Elkhart, Ind.) finished a kill to stop the Gray Wolves and Kristen Mitchell (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) helped pull the Pilots even at 9-9. The Pilots were able to keep it close in the first set, keeping within three points until finding themselves at a 19-16 deficit. After a Pilot timeout, the Gray Wolves pushed the lead to 22-17 and were able to close out the first set 25-20.
Lourdes benefited from seven early Pilot errors in the second set to take a 10-6 lead. Abby Armold (FR/Valparaiso, Ind.)'s service ace quickly got the Pilots back to even at 13 and Armold's kill from Katie Easter (JR/Logansport, Ind.) kept it knotted at 17. The Lourdes offensive attack came alive and gave the visitors a 24-21 lead and a point away from closing out the second set. Payton Anderson (JR/New Castle, Ind.) responded with consecutive kills, and a Lourdes error, drew the Pilots even at 24. However, the Gray Wolves notched back-to-back points to finish the second set 26-24.
Four Pilot errors gave the visitors a 4-3 lead in the third set and six kills by a powerful Lourdes attack extended their lead to 10-4. Multiple kills by Haley Brown (SR/Goshen, Ind.) pulled the Pilots to within 14-11 but the Gray Wolves held the Pilots at bay 17-12. After a Pilot timeout, the Pilots responded with a 5-2 run to pull within 19-17 but Lourdes continued to pressure the Pilots into errors and took the 6 of the final 7 points of the match to take the third set 25-18.
Haley Brown and Abby Armold paced the Pilot attack with 8 kills apiece while Payton Anderson added 7. Anderson added 18 assists while Katie Easter chipped in with 13. Erin Carlos (SR/Millersburg, Ind.) and Bridget Downs (SO/Lexington, Ky.) led the Pilot defense with 15 and 12 digs, respectively. Armold also added 2 service aces and 3.0 blocks in the effort.
"I'm proud of how we played," noted Head Coach Katie Weiss. "We didn't get a win this afternoon, but we played hard. We out-blocked Lourdes byt they out-hit us. I see huge improvement in our team and we will keep moving forward."
The Pilots travel to Upland on Wednesday to take on Taylor in a Crossroads League matchup, slated for a 5:00 pm start.
