Goshen, Ind. - The Bethel volleyball team traveled to Goshen in search of their first Crossroads League win of the season on Friday night and found it, taking a four-set match by scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15, to improve to 8-7 overall, and 1-2 in the Crossroads League on the season.
The Maple Leafs blitzed the Pilots early in the first set to take a 5-1 lead. However, the Pilots responded knotting the score at 6. After trading points, a Bridget Downs (SO/Lexington, Ky.) kill knotted the score at 13 and began a 8-0 Pilot run to take a commanding 20-13 lead. Makennize Williams (FR/Elkhart, Ind.) scored two kills while Haley Brown (SR/Goshen, Ind.) added another in the run. Kassandra Williams (JR/Lafayette, Ind.) added two kills later to make it 23-16 and Kristen Mitchell (JR/Indianapolis, Ind.) finished off the set on the attack to take a 25-18 win.
The Maple Leafs responded in the third set. After Brown gave the Pilots the first point of the set, the Maple Leafs regained control and never trailed. After a Payton Anderson (JR/New Castle, Ind.) kill brought it to within 8-7 for the Pilots, Goshen notched 6 straight points to go up 14-7. Katie Easter (JR/Logansport, Ind.) brought the Pilots close at 21-18 and Abby Armold (FR/Valparaiso, Ind.) added a kill to pull within 23-20 but the Maple Leafs would not be denied the 25-21 second set win.
The two teams played the third set close, never more than two points apart, until the Pilots defense forced four straight errors on the hosts and took a 16-11 lead. The Maple Leafs responded by bringing it back to 16-15, but Anderson helped keep the hosts at bay with a kill to make it 19-16. K. Williams and Brown put the Maple Leafs away with the four straight kills and Erin Carlos (SR/Millersburg, Ind.) polished off the third set with a service ace to win it 25-17.
The Pilots kept the momentum in their favor in the fourth set, jumping all over the Maple Leafs 8-1 on a K. Williams and Brown block. Anderson extended the lead to 14-6 and again to 18-10. The Pilots defense again locked down the hosts and the Pilots cruised to a 25-15 match-winning fourth set victory.
The Pilots notched 52 kills in the match on 130 total attacks with only 12 errors for a hitting percentage of .308. Three Pilots tallied double-digit kills, led by Haley Brown's 15. Brown recorded a .577 hitting percentage. Kassandra Williams added 10 kills to a .563 hitting percentage. Payton Anderson led the Pilots with 20 assists while adding 10 digs and 10 kills. Erin Carlos led with 20 digs and added 8 assists, while Katie Easter recorded 16 assists and 10 digs.
