Mishawaka, Ind. - The Bethel women's soccer team gave up three straight goals in the first 39 minutes of the match and lost 3-2 to Roosevelt on Wednesday evening to fall to 1-1-2 on the season.
Roosevelt earned their first win of the season, after dropping their first three decisions of the season to the Pilots' Crossroads League colleagues. Anna Agboola got the scoring started for the Lakers in the 10th minute to take the early 1-0 lead. Then again in the 29th minute, Monica Munoz netted a goal to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Then finally in the 39th minute, Chelsea Olson gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead, finding the back of the net.
The Pilots got on the board with just under three minutes remaining in the first half, when Rebecca Kanpol (JR/Fort Wayne, Ind.)'s shot was denied by the Laker goalkeeper but Ana Molina (FR/South Bend, Ind.) was there for the rebound for her third goal in as many matches to pull the Pilots to within 3-1 at intermission.
The Pilots battled in the second half but was unable to break through until Kanpol converted on a penalty kick in the 75th minute to get the Pilots to within a goal. A furious rally in the final 15 minutes fell short as the Pilots lost for the first time at Morey Field in 2017. The Pilots had plenty of scoring opportunities, outshooting their opponent 25-10, and had four shots miss off the post or the crossbar. Roosevelt's Kara Jones made 10 saves in net for the Lakers, including denying four in the final 15 minutes of the match, to preserve the victory.
"We unfortunately dug ourselves a bit of a hole in the first half, but I thought our girls responded well and showed a really good level in the second half tonight," stated Head Coach Jamie Lindvall. "Some great positives to build on and also some things to continue to refine as we go on the road this Saturday."
The Pilots return to action on Saturday as they travel to Anderson to take on the Ravens for a 12:30 pm kick-off.
