Despite a pair of early runs, the Bethel Pilots baseball team suffered a tough loss on the road on Friday to the Cougars of Spring Arbor. The Cougars tallied nine unanswered runs in a four-inning stretch to run away from BC and earn a 13-2 victory. The loss pushes BC's season record to 15-14 while their league mark slips to 5-12. The Cougars move to 16-21 on their campaign and climb to 9-8 in league action.
The Pilots jumped on the board first thanks to a two-out walk by Heath Brooksher in the top of the first that was trailed by a timely RBI double off the bat of Mike Wathier. However, the 1-0 lead was the last for the Pilots as a four-run bottom of the first gave the Cougars control of the contest. Bethel used a pair of hits and were aided by a wild pitch in their second at-bat to plate their second score of the ballgame, but the offense quickly dried up.
Bethel only mustered two more hits in their final five appearances at the plate while the Cougars' bats were strong and steady, banging out 11 total hits in the contest. SAU put two on the board in the second and the third innings each, which they followed with a single score in the fourth and a four-run effort in the fifth.
In a quick turnaround, Bethel will be back at Spring Arbor tomorrow for a pair of contests starting at 1:00 p.m. Game one against SAU is scheduled as a seven-inning affair while game two is slated as a nine-inning battle.
