The Lady Pilots closed out the 2016-17 regular season with a tough road loss to Saint Francis 70-66. The loss moves BC into a three-way tie for seventh place in the final league standings with a league record of 7-11 while USF jumps into a tie for second place with a league record of 11-7.
After playing even through 10 minutes of action, Saint Francis made their move in the second stanza by outscoring Bethel 19-6. The offensive woes for the Lady Pilots allowed USF to open up a solid 33-20 lead heading into the halftime break.
Bethel hung tough in the third quarter, but USF grew their lead after winning the quarter 19-18. However, just when it looked like the Cougars might walk away with an easy win, BC made their run. With just eight minutes to play and trailing by 14, the Lady Pilots put together a three-minute, 9-2 run that was jumpstarted by six straight points by Madison Schrock. After a USF bucket, Kamala Glenn tacked on three straight to cut the deficit to seven. BC trimmed it back to six after another Schrock score at the 1:19 mark and kept chipping away until they trailed by just four with 17 seconds remaining. Two clutch free tosses by USF's Josie Murphy padded the Cougars' lead. Even though BC scored on their final possession, it wasn't enough to creep any closer than four.
Schrock finished the day with a team-high 20 points, 13 of which came in the furious fourth quarter comeback. Savannah Bley also had a monster outing by scoring 18 points and collecting 16 rebounds, which goes in the books as her 15th double-double of the season.
With tiebreakers enforced, the three-way tiebreaker between Bethel, Goshen and Mount Vernon lands in favor of the Lady Pilots who own a head-to-head record of 3-1 against GC and MVNU. Goshen comes in second with a 2-2 record against BC and MVNU while Mount Vernon finished 1-3. With the nod in the tiebreaker, the Lady Pilots secure the seventh seed in the Crossroads League Tournament and will travel back to Fort Wayne for a second consecutive contest against Saint Francis. USF earns the second seed by finishing second in the league and owning a 2-0 head-to-head record against IWU who also finished with an identical 11-7 league record. The Lady Pilots and Cougars' quarterfinal contest is slated for Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
Other Crossroads League quarterfinals will feature top-seeded Marian hosting eighth-seeded Goshen, third-seeded IWU hosting sixth-seeded Huntington, and fourth-seeded Grace hosting fifth-seeded Taylor. The winner of the BC/USF matchup will advance to the semifinals to face the winner between IWU and HU.
