The Lady Pilots have played themselves into a four-way tie for fifth place in the Crossroads League standings after producing a 77-64 victory over Mount Vernon on Saturday. The win moves BC to 10-18 on the season with a 7-9 mark in league play while the Cougars of MVNU fall to 11-17 overall and with a 5-11 league record.
Bethel only trailed once on Saturday after a technical foul was assessed on the bench for a clerical error prior to the contest even tipping. MVNU took advantage by hitting one of the two tosses and went into the tip-off ahead of the Lady Pilots 1-0. In the opening minutes, BC wasted little time opening up a six-point lead that grew to as many as seven before settling back to a six-point cushion at the first break. Bethel continued to control the tempo and opened up a double-digit advantage on multiple occasions in the second stanza with the latter coming at the end of the half when BC entered the locker room up 35-25.
Highlighting the first half for BC was a major milestone achieved by Savannah Bley. Late in the first period, the 6'1" senior snagged her fifth rebound of the contest to bring her career total to 500, which makes her the 19th member of the Lady Pilots 500 rebound club. Bley corralled six boards in the first 20 minutes allowing her to start ascending up the all-time list, passing Kristin Sordelet who finished her three-year career with exactly 500.
The opening minutes of the third were less than ideal for the Lady Pilots faithful as they watched the 10-point lead dwindle down to just a two-point cushion halfway through the period. Timely free throws in the final minutes filled in where the BC offense was lacking, and BC remained in the driver's seat heading into the fourth on the right side of a 50-45 spread.
It only took 60 seconds for MVNU to make their move. A 5-0 run pulled the game to even for the first time since before the tip. But instead of crumbling, BC clawed back at the Cougars with a 10-0 run of their own fueled by triples from Madison Schrock and Lauren Grewe along with a pair of layups from Kamala Glenn and Kaitlin Elsasser. Bethel's 10-point surge seemed to have a strong effect on the Cougars' moral, and the guests never snuck any closer than seven points the rest of the contest. Bethel ballooned their lead to as many as 15 before securing their tenth win of the season with a 77-64 victory.
Schrock led all scorers in the contest with 23 points by hitting six-of-nine from the floor, including two of her signature three-point field goals. The senior sharpshooter now has 1,053 career points to her name and has climbed into the top 20 on BC's all-time scoring list. Also putting up strong offensive numbers for BC was Glenn who tossed in a career-high 17 points, including a pair of triples.
The Lady Pilots open up the final week of the regular season next Wednesday when they host Marian University, the 2017 Crossroads League Regular-Season Champions who are currently ranked fourth in the NAIA, at 7:00 p.m.
