The Lady Pilots picked up a key road win on Wednesday evening by defeating the Cougars of Spring Arbor University 63-60. With just two weeks left in regular-season play, the victory was especially essential when looking forward to postseason action as the win helped lift BC into a tie for seventh place in the Crossroads League standings. Bethel improves to 9-18 on the season and 6-9 in the Crossroads League while SAU slips to 12-15 overall and 3-12 in league play.
In the opening stanza, the Lady Pilots outplayed and outscored the Cougars to build a comfortable 33-18 lead at the break. While BC fired at a 56.0 percent clip from the floor, their defensive efforts were equally as impressive as they held SAU to a mere 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) from the field. The Lady Pilots were paced by Savannah Bley who poured in 12 of her game-high 17 points along with eight first-half rebounds.
The second half took a much different turn as the Cougars rushed out of the gate to score 12 unanswered, nearly erasing their deficit completely. While the hosts were able to inch within two, the Lady Pilots stopped the run in time to hold on to the slim advantage and ultimately build their lead back to eight by the third quarter break.
Another strong start for the Cougars led to the game's first tie at 43-43 with just 6:37 to play. BC retook the lead on the following possession thanks to a bucket from Madison Schrock. Although the lead never grew to more than six in the final six minutes, BC held on and never trailed. Leading by two with one minute to play, BC outscored SAU 7-6 thanks to a key layup from Kamala Glenn and a pressure-filled, five-of-six performance from the free-throw line for the BC squad.
Bley led BC on the stat sheet with 17 points and 12 rebounds while also adding two assists and two steals. Schrock added 13 to the BC cause while Glenn also reached double figures with 12. Macie Hinen had another big game for BC by snaring 12 rebounds and passing out a team-high three assists.
The Lady Pilots return home this weekend for a matchup with the Cougars of Mount Vernon. Tipoff in Gates Gymnasium is slated for 1:00 p.m. The women's contest will be followed by the men's BC/MVNU battle, which is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
