The Lady Pilots have made a habit this week of using late-game heroics to put tallies in the win column. Against Saint Francis, it was a layup by Kamala Glenn that pushed the Lady Pilots into the lead with just 0.7 seconds on the clock. The 56-55 final gives Bethel their third win in a row and their second one-point win in the waning seconds. The Lady Pilots improve to 6-16 overall and now sit at 3-7 in league play. Saint Francis falls to an even 11-11 and sits in a tie for fourth place in the league with a record of 6-4.
With neither team ever leading by double figures, the two teams traded leads throughout the afternoon. Bethel seemed to taking control of the contest early when they produced their biggest lead of the night during the first few minutes of the second period. However, their 17-11 edge didn't last long as back-to-back-to-back triples flipped the scripts, and the USF Cougars went up three, equaling their biggest lead of the night to that point. Trailing by two, BC tightened up defensively, holding the Cougars scoreless in the final 3:27 of the half while adding five to their total. The mini 5-0 run allowed BC to enter the intermission leading 25-22.
In the third quarter, USF was able to get one back by outscoring the Lady Pilots 16-15, and the stage was set for another close finish. The first run belonged to Saint Francis, and that 15-6 run put BC behind the eight ball. Sitting on the wrong end of a 53-46 score, the Lady Pilots faced their biggest deficit of the night with just under four minutes to play. BC's response came quickly. Glenn and Savannah Bley put together a 6-0 run over the next 90 seconds, giving the Lady Pilots new life with 2:30 remaining. After trading missed buckets and two minutes of scoreless action, a steal by Macie Hinen led to the go-ahead bucket scored by Bley. With the clock under 30 seconds, USF could hold for the last shot. Instead, a miss turned into a second-chance opportunity on which the Lady Pilots were whistled for a foul. The Cougars' Kara Gerka calmly sank a pair of freebies to put USF back on top with five seconds remaining.
In nearly a carbon copy of Wednesday's contest with Taylor, Coach Eric Gingerich called a timeout to advance the ball to half court. On the inbound, Glenn went into attack mode, and where Wednesday she delivered the timely dump pass to the post, this time she took the ball all the way to the glass and laid in what would prove to be the game winner with just 0.7 seconds remaining. The Cougars launched a desperation heave as the horn sounded, but it was well off the mark and BC earned the 56-55 win.
In a stat line that has almost become routine, Bley finished with a double-double: 24 points and 10 rebounds. During the three-game win streak, the 6'1" NorthWood High School product has averaged 20.7 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting the ball at a sizzling 82.9 percent clip (29-of-35). On Saturday, Bley bettered that percentage by hitting 11-of-12 (91.7 percent), just one shot away from a flawless game.
The Lady Pilots look to keep the win streak alive on Wednesday when they travel to Huntington University for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff against the Foresters.
