After a tough home loss to Spring Arbor on Wednesday, the Lady Pilots responded on Saturday with a gutsy road win over the Cougars of Mount Vernon. A last second defensive stop and a pair of clutch free throws lifted BC to their first league win of the season and their fourth win overall. While BC moves to 4-16 (1-7), MVNU falls to 7-13 overall and holds an identical 1-7 league mark.
It was a rollercoaster first half as MVNU busted out of the gate on a 13-4 run, leading to their biggest lead of the contest just six minutes into the game. The Lady Pilots rallied quickly with a 12-4 run of their own to narrow the gap to a single point at the quarter break.
In the second period, the Lady Pilots and Cougars traded buckets from start to finish. On the offensive end of the floor, BC's answer to point production was senior Savannah Bley. Bley, who scored six of BC's 16 points in the first quarter when she shot three-of-three from the floor, kept pace in the second period by scoring eight of Bethel's 12 as she connected on all four attempts from the floor. Thanks to her production, BC narrowly outscored MVNU 12-11 in the 10-minute period, and the teams entered their respective locker rooms deadlocked at 28.
The Lady Pilots controlled the tempo in the third, building a six-point lead on multiple occasions. The latter such lead came in the final minutes of the stanza after back-to-back made free throws by Madison Schrock were followed by a triple from Kamala Glenn. The five-point surge put BC on top 49-43 with just one period to play.
The Lady Pilots' lead grew to nine at the 7:36 mark of the fourth when Bley connected on her tenth field goal of the day, her tenth make on her tenth attempt. However, the tide turned quickly when the nine-point lead was erased by an 11-0 Cougar run that put Bethel on the wrong end of a 57-56 tally with just three minutes to play. BC scrambled to re-establish a lead, and with less than five seconds to play, Macie Hinen collected an offensive rebound and converted the putback, allowing BC to sneak ahead by two. Following a timeout, MVNU turned the ball over, allowing BC another offensive possession. A foul led to two free tosses for Schrock which were both on target, bringing the final score to 67-63.
Bley's career day was one to remember. The 6'1" post finished with 26 points on 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) from the floor. She didn't miss a shot until midway through the final period. She also nabbed 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Schrock added 11 points to the cause while also tying a career high with six assists. Glenn also reached double figures and finished with 10 points for the Lady Pilots.
After the longest road trip of the Crossroads League season, the Lady Pilots will enjoy back-to-back home games next week starting off with a matchup against Taylor on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
