The Lady Pilots had a tough start to 2017 facing NAIA No. 5 Marian on the road and falling to the defending national champions 81-58. The loss moves BC's record to 3-14 on the season and 0-5 in league play while MU improves to 14-3 and sits in second place in league standings with a 4-1 mark in interleague action.
For the first 15 minutes of the night, the Lady Pilots gave Marian a battle and trailed by a single point with five minutes left to play in the opening half. On the heels of a triple from Taylor Fielstra that pulled BC within one point, the Knights rattled off eight straight to build their biggest lead of the half at 32-23. After trading buckets, MU headed into the break on top 36-27.
Marian wasted little time after the break as an eight-point run buried BC in a 17-point hole less than two minutes into the half. The Knights never looked back. The hosts then ballooned their advantage to as many as 25 in the third period. Through the final 13 minutes, MU kept BC at bay, leading to the lopsided 23-point loss.
Bethel was anchored by yet another double-double from senior Savannah Bley who finished with 18 points on eight-of-ten from the field and a season-high 16 rebounds. This marks Bley's third double-double in the last four games during which the 6'1" NorthWood product has averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds while shooting at a 67.6 percent clip from the field.
The Lady Pilots will be back on the road this weekend against NAIA No. 11 Indiana Wesleyan. BC and IWU will collide on Saturday in game one of a women's/men's doubleheader scheduled to tip off at 1:00 p.m. at Luckey Arena in Marion, Indiana.
