The seventh-ranked Panthers of Davenport University used two dominant first and fourth quarters to defeat the Lady Pilots on Thursday by a final tally of 85-51. The win is the 14th of the season for DU whose overall record moves to 14-1 while the Lady Pilots fall to 2-13 at the midway point of the 2016-17 regular season.
Davenport controlled the contest from the tip, scoring the first six points of the contest before BC was able to get on the scoreboard. DU's first double-digit lead came just under seven minutes into the match at 14-4, and the hosts held a nine-point cushion at the first quarter break. In the period, the Panthers found success early and often in the paint, scoring all 14 points from close range.
The Lady Pilots climbed right back into contention in the early goings of the second quarter thanks to six unanswered points from the freshman duo of Tahya Bruce and Lauren Grewe. However, the Panthers clawed right back with a 19-6 run that opened up a 16-point advantage. Three more points from Grewe and a bucket by Kaitlin Elsasser narrowed the gap to 11 heading into the intermission. In the half, Grewe led BC with nine points, including a pair of triples and an old-fashioned, three-point play.
In the second stanza, the Panthers closed the door early by extending their lead to 18 in the first eight minutes of play. Even though BC was only outscored by five points in the third quarter, the 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter left a tall task against one of the top contenders in the country. In the final ten minutes, DU owned both ends of the floor by scoring 26 points while keeping Bethel at bay with just eight, leading to the 85-51 lopsided result.
Grewe finished the night with a new career high and team high of 14 points and was the only Lady Pilot to reach double figures.
BC will be back on the court tomorrow in the final game of the DU Classic facing Cornerstone University at 5:00 p.m.
