The Lady Pilots never trailed on Friday night against Saint Ambrose on their way to their first win of the 2016-17 campaign. The 64-53 decision gives Coach Eric Gingerich his first collegiate and career win in this first season as a head coach in the college ranks. BC moves to 1-12 while the Fighting Bees of Saint Ambrose now sit at 2-9, just one year after making an appearance in the NAIA DII National Tournament.
Kaitlin Elsasser put the Lady Pilots on the board with a layup in the opening minute of action, and although SAU knotted the game twice in the first period, Bethel never trailed the visitors in the 40-minute affair. After leading 11-9 at the first break, the Lady Pilots extended their lead with five unanswered from freshman Lauren Grewe. SAU fought back to close the gap to one before Madison Schrock and Kamala Glenn scored back-to-back buckets, moving the lead to five at the intermission.
Clinging to a four-point advantage after five minutes of play in the second half, six straight points gave Bethel their first double-digit lead of the night. Down the stretch, four points from Schrock allowed the Lady Pilots to keep the three-possession advantage heading into the final stanza.
The period did not start the way the Lady Pilots planned with the Bees landing an 11-4 run and cutting the lead to just two. After Macie Hinen pushed the lead to four, Grewe caught fire for the Lady Pilots by netting back-to-back triples and drawing a charge on the defensive end of the court. Grewe's second trifecta gave BC their biggest lead of the night at 11 with under a minute to play. BC's final five points came at the free-throw line as Hinen and Schrock combined to hit five-of-six to seal the victory.
Savannah Bley led all scorers netting a game-high 18 points while snagging 12 boards, which marks her fifth double-double of the season. Schrock and Grewe also finished in double figures with 15 and 11, respectively.
The Lady Pilots will return to Gates Gymnasium on Tuesday to host Rochester College at 5:00 p.m.
