The Bethel Lady Pilots picked up their second consecutive Crossroads League road win on Saturday as they downed the Lady Lancers from Grace College. With the 2-0 record on the week, Bethel's season record improves to 9-13 while Grace falls to 5-17 on their campaign and continues to search for their first win in league competition.
After falling behind 19-10 in the first 10 minutes of action, the Lady Pilots clamped down defensively and allowed the Lady Lancers just five points in the second quarter while the offense tallied 15 in that second 10-minute stretch. Bethel's first half comeback was completed with just 32 seconds remaining in the opening stanza when Aimee Swihart connected on a pair of free tosses, putting her squad up 25-24.
The Lady Lancers took a slim one-point lead when Gabby Miller connected on Grace's second possession in the third quarter, but that was the last time the scoreboard was in favor of the host. With 6:24 minutes to play in the third period, the Lady Pilots opened up an 18-4 run that ballooned BC's advantage to 16. In that decisive run, six Lady Pilots were able to contribute offensively and as a team combined to hit 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
BC kept their foot on the pedal by scoring seven of the first nine points in the fourth quarter and saw their biggest lead of the day after a two-point field goal from Kaitlin Elsasser landed in the bottom of the net at the 7:29 mark. The Lancers never posed a real threat as the Lady Pilots walked away with an 18-point win at 72-54.
For the second time in as many games, Madison Schrock led BC with 18 points. Schrock finished the night shooting 60 percent from the field (6-of-10) and 50 percent from beyond the three-point line (four-of-eight). She also chipped in four assists and three steals. Also reaching double figures was Swihart with 14 and Savannah Bley who added 11. Ashley Lutz who finished with six points set a new career-high by snagging seven steals. As a team, BC recorded 20 thefts, which is the most by the Lady Pilots this season.
The Lady Pilots will put their two-game win streak on the line this Wednesday as they host the Cougars of Mount Vernon Nazarene University at 7:00 p.m. BC will be looking to even the count with MVNU as the Cougars took the first matchup between the two squads 69-63 back in November.
