The Lady Pilots struggled on their first outing in 2015, falling to the Lady Lancers of Grace College 57-87. The loss drops Bethel to 7-9 on the season and 1-3 in league play while the Grace women move to 8-8 (1-3).
Grace raced out and built an early 16-2 lead in the opening minutes and never looked back. The Lady Pilots closed the gap by scoring eight unanswered points with 12 minutes left in the half, but cold shooting and defensive struggles allowed GC to balloon the lead to 22 over the next five minutes of play. At the break, BC trailed the Lady Lancers 25-50. During the opening 20 minutes, BC was only able to connect on 28.1% of their attempts from the floor while Grace cashed in shooting 57.6% from the floor and hit all 10 attempts from the free throw line.
The Lady Pilots could only manage to chip into the lead by a single point, trailing 30-54 with 17:22 left in the half. Grace eventually opened up the lead to 33 before draining the clock and handing BC a 57-87 loss.
Chelsea Ward led the Lady Pilots with 12 points while Erin Hunt added 11, including going a perfect three-for-three from behind the three-point line. Rachel Jennings also finished in double figures for BC with 10. Angelique Moore, who was sidelined with fouls for most the contest, surpassed the 500 point mark in her career and finished the game with 502 career points.
"Grace outperformed us in every area of the game today," said Coach Andrew Wodrich. "They were ready to go, and we simply were not. We have to continue to fight and compete for longer durations. Give Grace a ton of credit for coming in here and playing as well as they did."
The road only gets tougher for the Lady Pilots as they dive deeper into Crossroads League play. Next up for Bethel will be a home contest against the currently eighth-ranked and reigning NAIA DII National Champions, the University of Saint Francis, on Wednesday, January 7th at 7:00 p.m. EST.
The Bethel College Pilots compete in 15 intercollegiate sports for men and women.
