The Bethel Pilots faced off this afternoon against Indiana University-Southeast in the elimination game of the NAIA National Softball Championship in Cleveland, Tennessee and came away with a 1-0 victory.
The story of the game was sophomore pitching sensation Natalie Newell. The recent Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year stepped in the circle to throw a no-hitter for Coach Meagan Smalley's squad. It is the first no-hitter for Bethel College in the NAIA National Tournament. Throughout the first five innings Bethel would get five hits, but was unable to push a run across leaving a total of six Pilots left on base. Bethel's lone run came from the heroics of Brookelyn Smith in the bottom of the sixth. With a two-two count the junior infielder would crush a solo homerun over the leftfield fence giving Bethel a 1-0 lead.Newell would close out the game in the top of the seventh striking out three IUSE batters to help Bethel advance.Junior Courtney Cazarez would lead the Pilots with two hits, while Ali Holsclaw, Danielle Reilly, Katie Claxon and Brookelyn Smith all added one hit respectively. For the game, Natalie Newell would strikeout 15 batters pushing her overall record to 15-7 on the season and moving Bethel's overall record to 27-12.
