The Bethel College women's tennis team renewed its' annual contest with the St. Mary's College Belles on Thursday afternoon, making the short trip to play in the Eck Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Bethel College, but inclement weather conditions forced the match to be moved indoors. In a hard-fought match, St. Mary's prevailed by the score of 7-2, leaving the Lady Pilots with a season record of 12-5.
The match began with doubles play where the Lady Pilots managed to take just one of three contests. The number two doubles team of Bethany Blodgett and Morgan McFarren continued their impressive play this season with a solid 8-4 victory.
In singles action, the Lady Pilots once again battled hard at every position. However, St. Mary's was able to win five of six matches to close out the contest. The lone Bethel singles triumph was turned in at the number three position by Bethany Blodgett with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
"We got off to a good start this evening in doubles", stated Bethel coach, John Natali. "Bethany and Morgan cashed in for us at number two with a win while Molly and Whitney led their match until late when St. Mary's rallied to take the point. In singles, we played well at several positions, but couldn't get over the hump against a very good team from St. Mary's. An obvious highlight for us was the play of Bethany Blodgett in her singles match where she took her game to a whole new level today winning in dominant fashion."
The Lady Pilots will have little time to rest as they will return to action on Friday, April 12th when they will travel to Cedarville, Ohio to battle Cedarville University. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
