The Bethel College men's tennis team traveled to Defiance, Ohio on Friday afternoon to battle the Yellow Jackets and dropped a hard-fought match by the score of 6-3.The loss drops Bethel's spring mark to 0-2 and their overall season record to 3-13.
The match began with doubles play where three very competitive matches were contested. However, the Pilots only managed to claim victory at the number three position, thanks to a huge rally from Mason Heller and Kyle Hanby. Mason and Kyle trailed 7-4 before winning the final five games of the set to secure the win.
In singles action, the Pilots received winning efforts from Trent Stout at the number three spot in three sets, and from Caleb Hadden at the number five position in straight sets. Ethan Turner, Rafael Barreto, Heller and Hanby were all very competitive in their singles matches, but came up short in their bids for a win.
"We got off to a very slow start today in our doubles matches, falling way behind early", stated Bethel coach, John Natali. "But then all three doubles teams grabbed some momentum late in their matches that carried over into our singles contests. That's where the match was determined as we dropped a pair of three-set matches that would have put us over the top. But considering this was just our second match of the spring and Defiance was playing their twelfth match, I thought we did pretty well."
The Pilots will return to action on Friday, April 12th when they will travel to Cedarville University (OH) for a match set to begin at 3:00pm.
