Led by the inspired play of southpaw senior Ashlee Ort, the 13th ranked Lady Pilots traveled to Winona Lake Wednesday night and came away winners over Grace College 62-55 in Crossroads League play.
Ort, who found herself on the bench early with foul trouble, finished with a game high 14 points and 9 rebounds to lead the way for Bethel, who improved to 23-6 overall on the season and 13-4 in Crossroads League play.
Bethel trailed briefly in the opening minute of the game but quickly grabbed control of the game when Georgia Boisse and Alyshia Harvey ignited the Lady Pilot offense in the first half. Boisse scored 7 of her 11 points in the opening stanza and Harvey knocked down two straight clutch trifectas while coming off the bench. Bethel held a slim lead at the break, 31-28 as both teams struggled from the field (BC 37% and Grace 27%). Grace was 10-13 from the foul line in the first 20 minutes but BC offset the charity toss discrepancy by canning 5 of 10 from downtown.
Grace again made a mini-run in the second half but this time was thwarted when Erin Hunt nailed a three pointer from the baseline corner to push BC's lead back to 6 points and give the Lady Pilots control of the game for the remainder.
Ort and Boisse were joined in double digit scoring by Kristen Hicks, who finished with 10, while Laura Johnson chipped in with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Bethel converted on 14 of 15 (93%) from the foul line and held Grace to 31%shooting for the game.
"Tonight was a good road win against a very scrappy and competitive Grace team," said Bethel Coach Jody Martinez. "I thought we did a good job of balanced scoring and hitting our free throws. Our defense wasn't as active like last Saturday but any win is a good win in this league, especially on the road," added Martinez. "Ashlee Ort did a great job on both ends of the court and our bench gave us great minutes of productivity especially on the defensive end. We need to continue to rely on our defense to finish the regular season strong vs. Marian on Saturday."
The Lady Pilots will honor their 10 seniors (yes, you read that right) on Saturday when they host Marian University at 1:00 at the Wiekamp Center. Bethel's seniors include Ann Beachy, Baysia Cox, Laura Johnson, Alyssa Toupin, Ashlee Ort, Chrissy Hooks, Alyshia Harvey, Katy Stuppy, Kristen Hicks and Georgia Boisse.
